What is a computer network?
We can think of a computer network as an electronic
orchestra containing the ‘things’ that our organization uses to share, store
and process information, provide services and do work. The “members” of these
orchestras comprise a number of very different elements. The term
"network" refers to the usual set of suspects - servers, storage
devices, switches, firewalls, routers, printers and desktops. We may be
thinking of things like smartphones, desktops and tablets. Today's network,
however, includes many other things we might not think of - fax machines,
postal equipment, robotics manufacturing equipment, heating and air
conditioning systems, lighting systems, security systems, and even things like
entertainment systems, refrigerators, toasters, and coffee makers! In a
network, all of these tools are connected and talk to each other to make the
work we need to do and our actions - and our lives, easier.
Technology used in computer networks
There are many ways to connect to a Network - traditionally,
devices have been connected and communicated via copper wire, but today devices
can communicate with light via fiber optic cable and infrared signals, or radio
signals via wireless access points. wire, Bluetooth connections. , and even
satellites!
