Connect two computers directly with cable
The standard method of networking two computers involves
making a special connection by plugging a cable into both systems. You may need
an Ethernet crossover cable, a null modem serial cable, or a parallel
peripheral cable, or special USB cables.

The Ethernet method is the preferred option, as it supports
a high-speed, reliable connection with the minimum required resolution. In addition,
Ethernet technology offers the most common solution, allowing networks to be
built with more than two computers later.
If one of your computers has an Ethernet adapter, but the
other has USB, an Ethernet crossover cable can be used by plugging a
USB-to-Ethernet switch into the computer's USB port.

Linear and parallel connections
This type of cable, known as a Direct Cable Connection in
Microsoft Windows, offers lower performance but the same basic utility as
Ethernet cables. You may prefer this option if you have Ethernet cables
available and network speed is not an issue. Parallel and parallel cables are
never used to network more than two computers.
USB connections
Standard USB 2.0 cables or newer cables with Type-A
connectors can connect two computers directly to each other. You may prefer
this option over others if your computers do not have active Ethernet devices.
Special connections with Ethernet, USB, serial or parallel
cables are required:
Each computer has an active network interface with an outer
jacket for the cable.
The network settings on each computer are configured
appropriately.
