Another example of an overlapping network is a distributed hash table, which maps the keys to the nodes in the network. In this case, the core network is an IP network, and the overlapping network is a table (actually a map) indexed by keys.
Overlapping networks have also been proposed as a way to
improve the internet route, such as by ensuring the quality of services to
achieve high quality streaming media. Previous proposals, such as IntServ,
DiffServ, and IP Multicast, have not been widely accepted because they require
modification of all routers on the network. [Quote required] overlay protocol
software without the cooperation of Internet service providers. The overlapping
network has no control over how packets are routed in the underlying network
between two overlapping nodes, but can control, for example, the sequence of
overlapping nodes that a message traverses before reaching its destination.
